What does the term 'healthy' mean to you? What do you envisage 'fitness' to be?
We all have a different interpretation of the term health and fitness, which means that we set individual targets for ourselves and hold ourselves accountable to different standards. We do share one commonality in the fact that our bodies are everything we have; they are our most valuable possessions and our vehicles through life. So surely our health, whether it is physical or mental, demands and deserves our very own self-care and constant attention, right?
You might be thinking, what makes health and fitness important enough to warrant a coaching blog? Well, I say it is important because without our health we cannot pursue our goals, our dreams, our aspirations for the future to the best of our abilities or in extreme cases, not at all. Whether we set specific time orientated goals or not, we are all in some capacity making decisions and choices for our futures and we do so by banking on the sustainability or improvement of our health. Oddly enough, when we are making all of these future plans we very rarely take into account how our current lifestyle choices are going to impact our future lives, we just take it for granted that we will be able to do all the things that we expect of ourselves.
Health and fitness is vital to achieving what we want to achieve, to being wherever it is that we want to be in life. When you pause and think about it, the quality of our experiences depends on the state of our health; it impacts on everything. Without a reasonable amount of health and fitness we do not have the vitality to live fulfilling lives or be in a position to create our best futures - ultimately, is fulfilment not what we all want but just in different guises?
I say that health and fitness deserves concentrated attention because it is the crux to everything and with it you have more energy and enthusiasm to embrace and appreciate what life has to offer. When at your optimum health then you can generate and sustain a mind-set that makes you unstoppable in the other areas of your life that you want to improve on. It helps you to start from a positive place, seeps into all your experiences and puts you as a number one priority in your own life. I suggest that we consider being proactive rather than reactive with our health and fitness so that our futures have the best chance of being as interesting and as varied as we want them to be.
A number of years ago I stopped paying attention to my health and I let it slip. Why? Because I had never really had any serious health issues so I didn’t ever really question the daily choices I was making; I assumed I would always bounce back after a bout of illness. However, I wasn’t eating well, I wasn’t really doing regular exercise, I wasn’t getting adequate rest, I had low energy levels, I was trying to please too many people and eventually I burnt out. Looking back it clearly wasn’t a recipe for great health. The problem was I had become accustomed to being generally in a poor state of health, I considered it the norm, and so I didn’t pay enough attention to what was happening to my body until the day I could barely function. It took my body physically shutting down on itself to get my undivided attention and for me to look at the lifestyle I was leading and then make the essential changes to regain my health. The road to recovery was long and hard, but I learnt a valuable lesson.
I urge you to consider your health and to appreciate all your body does for you on a daily basis. Also, I encourage you to consider where health and fitness is in your priorities list. What would make it a higher priority for you? If you could take one action that would bring a beneficial improvement, what would that action be? What is likely to happen if you invest some time in your health and fitness? What goal could you set to get you one step closer to where you want to be?
